The species of dolphins that we see on our boat trips through Huatulco.

DOLPHIN SPECIES

The two most common dolphin species we see in Huatulco are the coastal spotted dolphins and the Central American spinner dolphins. Both are unique subspecies found only from southern Mexico to Panama. There are three other species of dolphins resident in Huatulco; Bottlenose, Rough-toothed and Short Beaked Common dolphins. We rarely see; Orca, False Killer whales, Risso dolphins and Short Finned Pilot whales.

COASTAL SPOTTED DOLPHIN
Coastal spotted dolphins are the most frequently encountered dolphin species in Huatulco.

COASTAL SPOTTED DOLPHIN

Stenella attenuata graffmani

The Coastal Spotted dolphin is a unique subspecies of the Pantropical spotted dolphin. It is found only from southern Mexico to Panama, within 20 km of the coast. It is dark gray in color and is often seen in pods of 20-500 dolphins. They are one of the two species we are researching in Project Stenella.

CENTRAL AMERICAN SPINNER DOLPHIN

The Central American spinner dolphin is a unique subspecies found from southern Mexico to Panama.

CENTRAL AMERICAN SPINNER DOLPHIN

Stenella longirostris centroamericana

The Central American Spinner dolphin is a unique subspecies of the more common spinner dolphin which can be found circumtropically. It is found only from Oaxaca to Panama, within 40 km of the coast. It is uniformly gray, with an unusual dorsal fin and some days we see groups of thousands. It is the other species that we are researching in Proyecto Stenella.

Rough-toothed dolphins are a resident species along the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Rough-toothed
Steno bredanensis

Rough-toothed dolphins are a tropical species that we see all year round in Huatulco. They do not have a pronounced melon and are usually found in small pods of 10 to 12 individuals. They are also unique in their syncronized style of swimming.

Bottlenose dolphins can be seen all year round from Huatulco during our tours.
The Bottlenose dolphin is a resident species that can be seen in Huatulco year-round.
Bottlenose
Tursiops truncatus

The Bottlenose dolphin is a resident species that can be seen in Huatulco throughout the year. There are several subspecies of bottlenose dolphins that can be found in the most of the world’s oceans. Normally we see them in groups of 15 to 50 individuals and they are usually very active.
